Research and Development Technician, Thermal Protection System Materials

El Segundo, CA | FULL-TIME

Principal Responsibilities

Cambium is seeking a Research and Development Technician – Thermal Protection System Materials to join our extreme environment composite materials team. You’ll work closely with our team of engineers and technicians to execute research and development tasks related to new product, process, equipment and tooling development, prototype fabrication, technology innovation and continuous improvement. This will be a hands-on role, and you will be involved in the entire process from molecular building blocks through composite fabrication to flying hardware.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a great team member committed to contributing to advanced material discovery, development and production.
  • Follow written test plans, standard operating procedures, and specifications, to fabricate, process and test various composite coupons and prototype hardware.
  • Operate, program and maintain composite processing equipment including ovens, autoclaves and high temperature furnaces.
  • Mixing, handling and safely disposing a range of chemicals according to standardized procedures.
  • Developing and maintaining process monitoring data acquisition systems collecting data foundational to our AI material discovery effort.
  • Innovating new and agile methods to test materials in extreme thermal environments.
  • Collaborating in the development and improvement of complex work instructions and procedures.
  • Designing and building fixturing and molds for process and test equipment.
  • Machining and fabricating prototype thermal processing equipment.
  • Preparing small test coupons for thermal, mechanical and optical analysis.
  • Following all safety protocols, contribute to and continuously improving our culture of safety.
  • Participate in a wide range of R&D problem-solving activities with an open mind and desire to learn. 

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificat
  • 4+ years work experience
  • 2-4+ years experience in laboratory or manufacturing environment with polymer composites
  • Experience with laying up, molding, curing, machining and bonding composite materials
  • Demonstrated skill with digital communication, data acquisition and documentation
  • Strong communication skills and team-oriented mindset
  • Detail oriented, patient and collaborative working style
  • Demonstrated creativity and adaptability that crosses industrial, artistic and scientific methods
  • Comfortable operating high power, heavy or high temperature machinery
  • Proven ability to complete complex tasks and document results on time
  • Due to the nature of the work, you must have US citizenship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in an engineering field.
  • Working experience with composite research and
  • Experience with composite fabrication processes including resin infiltration, vacuum bagging, filament winding prepreg, and wet layup.
  • Experience with operating high temperature heat treatment furnaces.
  • Experience processing ceramic materials.
  • Experience with CNC, CAD and CAM for ceramic materials.
  • Experience developing data acquisition hardware and software.
  • Experience with acceptance testing and qualification of new composite materials

Pay: $34 – $48 /hr ($70,720 – $99,840 /year equivalent)
